Virgo, Soul Ruler of Australia
Virgo is the force which rules Australia’s soul, whilst Capricorn rules the personality. When the soul chooses to incarnate in a certain race or nation, it takes into account the etheric constitution of the land, the ray and astrological qualities, the preponderance of souls on the same ray and so forth.
Even though for some world servers, their work takes them to many lands temporarily or permanently, there is much to be said for serving in the land of one’s heritage which most of us probably do. We are culturally conditioned – socially, politically, religiously from the food we eat to the local humour, the lingo the way we talk , they all contribute toward the national character and the part that we play within that complex web.
The rays for Australia have not been given by DK, but it has been speculated by this author that the soul ray is the second ray of Love-Wisdom – proposed for New Zealand also. Both nations are children of the mother country, Great Britain whom we know is definitely a second ray soul.
There is also a strong first ray in Australia, as well as the third, fifth, sixth and seventh rays. There seems to be an absence of the fourth ray which is much more noticable in New Zealand.
Virgo relates to Mother Earth or Gaia and her influence is widely apparent in New Zealand where Virgo rules that nation’s personality. First impressions traveling there were something like the virgin swathed in green. Aeoteroa (N.Z.) generally has a soft feminine force that prevails – and it rains plenty!1
Although parts of Australia could be considered similarly, on the whole the impression is one of a harsher, more intense environment beset frequently by drought. This is more in keeping with Australia’s earthy personality of Capricorn, the somewhat austere aridity of the Goat.
The Virgo soul of Australia is a more elusive quality – as like most nations and individuals, she is focused in her personality. The rays that pour through Capricorn are on the first ray line 1, 3, 5, 7 giving Australians a distinct directness, will and materialising ability. However, we are told that Virgo is at this point in time the strongest expression of the second ray of Love-Wisdom and if it is this nation’s soul ray, then Virgo would provide a potent interface.
Virgo and the First Ray
Virgo is related to the first ray of Will-Power, via its esoteric veiled ruler Vulcan, who forges away deep in his underground cave creating magical implements for the soul’s travail – swords for warriors and objects of great beauty for his wife Venus. Vulcan forges the instruments of constructive living.
There is a very powerful etheric constitution in Australia, into which the inhabitants are permanently plugged – and it is the largest remnant of ancient Lemuria. Considering the first ray again, even though Lemuria is technically the third continent, esoterically speaking it is the first continent and first rootrace because that is where human Individualisation began, where humans emerged as distinct spiritual entities or evolving souls – from their hitherto membership of the animal kingdom.
Considering Virgo the Mother, from one viewpoint she birthed humanity in this ancient time. Virgo constitutes one half of the Leo-Virgo sphinx, half lion (or beast) and half virgin (human), wherein is tied up the mystery of the solar angels and the divine hermaphrodite:
“In Lemurian days, during the early period of animal man and before humanity appeared on earth, in the interim period of development, eight signs influenced the planet and the kingdoms of nature found upon it. There was no response to the influences of Leo and Virgo. The mystery of the Sphinx did not exist and these two signs were not then part of the zodiacal wheel. Then individualisation took place [in later Lemuria] and the seed of Christhood was planted in man and these two signs began to influence humanity, and gradually that influence was recognised and the zodiac was then known to have ten signs.”2
The Leo-Virgo symbology has many connections from the more cosmically considered first and second Creative Hierarchies, to the mystery of the higher and lower minds and their relation to one another.
Nevertheless, one fascinating fact is that at the start of Individualisation 21.6 million years ago, humanity were hermaphrodite or androgynous. Yet by the time the spark of mind had fully dawned upon infant humanity 18.5 million years ago, it coincided also with the complete separation of the sexes and the method of birth that we know today.
In other words, there was an interlude of three million years or about one subrace of the Third (Lemurian) Rootrace for both the spark of mind to fully register and sexual separation to take place. There is a great and profound mystery hidden here that is worth reflecting upon.
Virgo is a most ancient sign and relates to the third principle of Active-Intelligence developed in the First Solar System (esoterically the third solar system) and carried forward into this Second Solar System that is developing Love-Wisdom. Yet at this time DK informs us that Virgo is the most powerful expression of the Love-Wisdom or the Christ principle. Hence the substance of the first solar system is the foundation for that of the second. Yet again there is an association of Virgo with the first ray because of her relationship to this First Solar System:
Virgo [is] … identified …with the mother principle and is believed to be the director of the energies, developed and recognised in the first solar system.3
As Virgo is anciently related to this third principle of Active-Intelligence, so it is that around the third subrace of the Third Rootrace this principle started to wax in strength, culminating in the allegory of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden: “… that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil . And the eyes of them both were opened” (Genesis 3:5-7)
The First Ray and Radioactivity
Continuing in the vein of Australia, Virgo and the first ray, the latter also relates to radioactivity, something that has only been exoterically discovered relatively recently in human history and whose awesome power put an end to World War II. The Master DK states:
This Law of Radiation is one that is beginning to be recognised by scientists since their acceptation of the radioactivity of certain substances, and when they are willing to approximate the occult conception of the radiatory, or emanatory condition, of all substances at a specific point in evolution, then they will very definitely approach Reality.
Radiation is the outer effect produced by all forms in all kingdoms when their internal activity has reached such a stage of vibratory activity that the confining walls of the form no longer form a prison, but permit of the escape of the subjective essence. It marks a specific point of attainment in the evolutionary process, and this is equally true of the atom of substance with which the chemist and physicist deal, when working with the elements, as it is of the forms in the vegetable kingdom, the forms in the animal kingdom, in the human, and, likewise, in the divine.
In studying the subject of radiatory activity, we are dealing with the effect produced by the inner essence as it makes its presence felt through the form, when the form has been brought to a stage of such refinement that it becomes possible.
When this realisation is applied to all the forms in all the kingdoms, it will be found possible to bridge the gaps existing between the different forms of life, and the “elements” in every kingdom, and those unifying radiating centres will be found. The word “element” is yet confined to the basic substances in what is called essential matter, and the chemist and physicist are busy with such lives; but their correspondence (in the occult sense of the term) is to be found in every kingdom in nature, and there are forms of life in the vegetable kingdom which are occultly regarded as “radioactive,” the eucalyptus tree being one such form. There are forms of animal life equally at an analogous stage and the human unit (as it approaches “liberation”) demonstrates a similar phenomenon.4 (Author’s italics)
Virgo and the Vegetable Kingdom
There are many important points in this passage yet the most striking in Australia’s case is the reference to eucalyptus trees. Elsewhere DK remarks on the fact that the vegetable kingdom has achieved relative perfection:
“In the basic colour, green, we have the indication of the potency of Saturn. Esoterically speaking, the vegetable kingdom is upon an advanced stage of the path of discipleship, and hence Saturn and Mars are active. The influence of the latter planet is to be seen in the prevalence of the colours red, rose, yellow and orange in the flowers at this time.”5
This passage recalls “the virgin swathed in green” as it does the middle decanate of Virgo ruled by Saturn. Mars and Saturn govern the third and fourth initiations respectively, the former being regarded as the first real solar initiation and the latter as that of liberation or the perfected “Arhat” of the human kingdom.
Yet the radioactivity of the collective eucalyptus (now in many other countries) indicates that this species is at the point analagous to liberation of the human unit – in other words, the point of higher consciousness unfoldment. (Bear in mind that the Science of Initiation is one of the “sub-sciences” of Esoteric Astrology)
As mentioned above, there are other forms of life that demonstrate this radiation from the highly evolved domestic animals, to roses and many flowers, to the precious metals and crystals of the earth. In the mineral kingdom these life forms express radioactivity; in the vegetable kingdom as emanatory perfumes and in the animal kingdom as intelligence and devotion, the first stages of developing love.
Another mineral in Australia that could be regarded as “occultly radioactive” may be uranium, the highest deposits of which lay in this land. So what does this all mean for this nation we may well ask? Given that all kingdoms are related to each other and that there is really no separation in the One Life, there may well be a specific and unique potency that these radioactive influences offer the inhabitants. This may apply to other eucalyptus-reforested countries and yet there may be something more specific in the country indigenous to the eucalypt.
When considering the human kingdom and the slice of the world that occupies Australia’s shores many hundreds of ethnic minorities these radioactive forces may well assist ethnic synthesis through uniting and energising all participatory bodies.
Likewise it would accelerate spiritual growth through the sheer physicality of these forces and their purificatory and cleansing effect upon the etheric-physical body. Added to which large amounts of sunshine energise and vitalise, creating a powerful etheric constitution that not only provides good physical health, but a powerful vehicle or interface for the expression of soul purpose.
Likewise, the effect upon the collective astral body would be potent. If we look at the kingdoms as analagous to the three lower personality vehicles, we have: Mineral Kingdom – physical body.
Vegetable Kingdom , astral body. Animal Kingdom , lower mental body.
The calming, pacifying and healing effect of the great forests and gardens of the world are well known. The perfection achieved in the vegetable kingdom imparts its ordered beauty, harmony and perfume to humans: There are now many healing flower essences in dozens of indigenous remedies, from Bach to Western Australian wildflowers to Himalayan and Californian – many are predominantly used on the astral body.
The vegetable kingdom has a most esoteric relationship to the deva kingdom, as does Virgo. Virgo is the Mother and builder of all forms in nature, to which the millions of lesser builders or elementals contribute, guided by the greater builders, who hold the blueprint of every individual seed species.
The love principle via the astral body is also a point of least resistance and so likewise for the vegetable and deva evolutions. Traditional flowers and perfume are given as symbols of love, the devas nurture and heal:
“In the case of the devas, love is the fulfilling of the law without pain or sorrow. It is for them the line of least resistance, for they are the mother aspect, the feminine side of manifestation, and the easy path for them is to give, to nourish, and to tend. Therefore, the devas of the waters pour themselves out in service to the vegetable and animal kingdoms.”6
Virgo, Pluto and the First Ray
Pluto is of course the co-ruler of the first ray with Vulcan, God of the Forge. The former is known as a non-sacred planet though most esoteric in its influence, whilst the latter is a sacred planet. (Non-sacred planets affect primarily the life of the personality, whilst sacred planets help bring a fusion of soul and body, quickening the intuition.)
Both Pluto and Vulcan work underground, out of sight, hence their extremely esoteric nature, yet powerful and pervasive influence. Virgo governs the dark rocky caves of the earth, womb-like places that nurture and gestate the inner being: “Out of the rocky cave, the Christ emerged and walked again upon the plains of Earth and from that time “the woman knew Him not.”7
Pluto as the feminine Kali destroys all impediments that block progress whilst Vulcan forges new instruments for living. Each planet rules the opposite sign, Pluto is soul ruler of Pisces and Vulcan is one of the veiled rulers of Virgo. This is fascinating for astrological students to consider, as both signs are conduits for only two rays, the second and sixth both on the seven ray or second ray line; yet both signs carry a strong undercurrent of the first ray.
It recalls that great Piscean avatar the Christ (born of a virgin, i.e. born with Sun in Virgo) who said: “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34) DK tells us that the Christ had a first ray mental body.
As Pluto and Vulcan work out of sight, there is also a tendency for those with a strong Virgo-Pisces polarity in their horoscopes to work behind the scenes or retreat to the hermit’s cave. There is a quiet dignity to Virgo who serves their fellow humanity with great humility and compassion.
As Virgo-Pisces are part of the mutable cross, ruled exoterically by Jupiter but especially the quicksilver Mercury, they act as great reflectors or mirrors to others.
Virgo is a triple sign of integration and wholeness, reflecting the synthesis of the threefold personality. Disciples born in the Pluto in Virgo generation (1956-1971) have a surgical incisiveness and ruthlessness that roots out impediments and barriers that constitute their Dweller on the Threshold; this naturally translates to all those that they serve in their immediate environment.
