Blue Moons
This full moon period for July 22 is the first of two Leo full moon periods for 2013. Astrologically, a “blue moon” is the second full moon that falls within the same astrological sign, not the same calendar month as is widely interpreted; it is therefore a potent doubling of energy associated with that zodiac sign. Blue moons are relatively rare and the last one that occurred in Leo was 2002. (See here for 2002 essay commentary.)

Also, the term “blue moon” or Leo “full moon” can be confusing because it is actually a Sun or solar festival. The Moon becomes full or “fully rounded out” in the opposite sign that the Sun is transiting through. Hence the Leo full moon period is named by some as “the Aquarian full moon” – and technically this is correct, as the Moon is in Aquarius, the opposite sign of Leo.

Yet it is misleading, and I re-emphasise this fact, because the insistence upon deferring to the position of the Moon, is to distract from the main theme – the essence of the zodiac sign where the SUN is transiting; that is the main quality of consciousness that is pouring through a sign in any given month.

The alignment of the Moon opposite serves to “open the gate” to spiritual forces for a period of a few days before and after the exact moment of the full moon cycle. Whilst the moon’s position is important, in terms of engaging, creating awareness about the pairs of opposites (such as Leo-Aquarius), it represents the form nature – a vehicle for soul consciousness, not soul consciousness per se.

Very broadly speaking, Sun=soul and Moon=form; spirit-matter, father-mother, Siva-Shakti. This is why the Moon rules the sacral or sexual centre, where new forms are generated – there are great mysteries here.

Esoterically the Moon is regarded as completely devoid of any spiritual life, it only has a biological influence. The seeds of spiritual life were withdrawn untold millions of years ago, due to the failure of the Moon chain evolution. The moon’s visibility in the sky today – as a satellite of the Earth – is a reminder of our past evolution that is linked to our current Earth Chain evolution.

The Moon does however, “veil” the forces of certain hidden planets – once the form nature and the individual’s personal “dweller” has been transcended, but that is another story!

One point worth reiterating in this double-Leo period is that our entire solar system’s evolution is under the direction of that great life we call Sirius,

“August, which is ruled by Leo, is the month of the Dog-star, or of Sirius, which thus brings Sirius into close relation to Leo. Leo, in the cosmic sense is ruled by Sirius. Sirius is the home of that greater Lodge to which our fifth initiation admits a man and to which it brings him, as a humble disciple.

Later, when the new world religion is founded and is working, we shall find that the major monthly festival in August, held at the time of the full moon, will be dedicated to the task of making contact, via the Hierarchy, with Sirian force.”1

The ancients understood this Sirian connection, hence the alignment of temples and pyramids worldwide, with this guiding and directing cosmic force.

Leo and Gold
Leo is ruled by the Sun whose brilliant light is reflected in gold. The ruler who wears a golden crown – or awakened crown chakra, governs accordingly.

The golden hues of the Sun radiate broadly, giving unconditionally to all, nurturing both physically and spiritually. Along with Jupiter, the Sun is the ruler of the second ray of Love-Wisdom, the substance that underlies this entire solar system.

Leo is unique in that it is symbolic of both the crown and heart centres and their ultimate working synthesis – of Love and Will. The golden-maned Leo is the Lion-Heart. Leo rules the heart centre, as do the Love-Wisdom ray distributors, Sun and Jupiter.

Hence Leo’s magnanimity, “… loftiness of spirit enabling one to bear trouble calmly, to disdain meanness and pettiness, and to display a noble generosity.” The Hindu word Magha is Sanskrit for grand or noble.2

Golden solar rays penetrate deep into the Earth, where their expression is found in gold. No wonder this precious metal has been of such significance to ancient cultures such as the Mayans, Aztecs and Egyptians.

Yet the value that those ancients ascribed to gold was entirely spiritual in many cases; it was only with the invasion of modern cultures that the value of the metal became far more materialised. It is interesting to note that gold is esoterically associated with the second ray, or “second aspect” as it is sometimes called:

“The standard metals, such as gold and silver, which play such a vital part in the life of the race, and are the mineral manifestation of the second aspect.”3

The human fascination and obsession with gold, although grossly materialistic, may well be subconsciously connected to the realisation that it is symbolic of solar consciousness – with which all of humanity will be united, once the Path of Liberation has been successfully trodden.

Yet so far, most of humanity are concerned with the furious accumulation of gold for material gain. The modern day value of gold is arbitrary, one could assign a similar value to sea-shells, like crazy Caligula once commanded his soldiers to gather – as the “spoils of war’!

The Sun is of course, reflected in all kingdoms of nature…

Occupy the Heart: Generosity and Kindness

Generosity is the moral imperative of this extraordinarily selfish era. Let us examine the origin of these two words, generosity and kindness.

Generous … from generosus, “of noble birth”, “magnanimous”. Latin genus, “kin”, “clan”, “race”. To be generous was literally a way of saying, “to belong to nobility”.4

Kindness … originally meant feelings of relatives for one another, hence “kin” as mentioned above. However, now that humanity is starting to recognise itself as one family (a greater “kin”), that transcends the tribal consciousness of the sacral centre, the practice of kindness becomes the next obvious evolutionary step.

Leo is therefore, the archetype of the noble ruler who has achieved self-rule and is able to serve others (Aquarius). The tyrant ruler who exercises severity, rules by the will working through the lower mind. The benevolent ruler has long since passed that stage of evolution and serves his/her subjects (Aquarius) from the heart, with grace and humility:

“In Leo, a man’s centre and point of consciousness is himself; he turns upon himself and revolves entirely upon his own axis and in respect and relation to himself, and is all the time the self-centered individual, consecrating all thought, time and service to his own well being and personal interests.

But in Aquarius, the polar opposite of Leo and its sign of consummation, he becomes outgoing; there is no centre or circle of circumscribed influence but only two outgoing lines of energy, pouring from him into the world of men. The self-conscious individual in Leo becomes the conscious server in Aquarius, and this is well expressed for us in the symbols of these two signs. The Aquarian is consecrated to group service and to the welfare of humanity.”5

The approaching Aquarian cycle of 2,160 years is automatically activating its Leo polarity, bringing about a shift from mass to individualised consciousness. Whilst the lower Leo attributes will prevail at first, our rapidly expanding global consciousness will draw those toward the path of the Leo sovereign, who serves his/her particular “kingdom” or community.

The annual passage of Leo is therefore a time to practice magnanimity and generosity. Quite often our personal gifts are withheld through fear, lurking within the solar plexus, preventing access to the heart. When the heart is “working”, it is like the Sun, radiating unconditionally upon all.

Leo is associated with both the heart and the solar plexus: There is a connection between this fifth sign Leo and fifth chakra, the place of the “animal brain”, abode of the untamed, rampaging lion who must emerge from its “lair” and return to the heart.

Generosity works on all levels – physical, emotional and mental. In examining these levels, the pairs of opposites, contradictions and paradoxes come into play. Generosity versus mean-ness or parsimony of spirit; kindness versus cruelty – yet at times one must be “cruel to be kind”:

“There are yin and yang sides to Loving-Kindness because it is not always soft, it can be hard because sometimes you must be severe out of kindness.”6

Some are mentally generous with the fruits of their labours, whilst others horde or steal others’ creative work. This is not just a discussion of “unawakened humanity”, these issues are rife for those who consider themselves “on the Path”.

Lack of generosity might also demonstrate as a refusal to acknowledge others’ accomplishments because of a fear of ego belittlement – the inferior-superior paradox; the illusion of power is maintained at the cost of grace – a further paradox, as the latter is where the real power lies. Yet others are so self-absorbed and pre-occupied in their “process”, that they do not recognise or hear the plight of others who might be in need of their time.

There is a second ray glamour called “selfish unselfishness” – giving with ulterior motive; it might be the rock star who contributes “generously” to charity, but with an eye on a knighthood; or the token gestures of the very rich, often a cold-blooded exercise for tax or sponsorship motives – compared to the “poor widow’s” infinitely more generous offering: “For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” (Mark 12:42)

Generosity is a state of mind – or heart – and does not necessarily refer to money – there are many ways of expressing generosity. Yet it does concern money (gold), because if the flow of outgoing love is blocked, then the reciprocal prana (money) will not flow back. “If you do not give, how can you receive?’

This does not necessarily mean that the super-rich have the love-flow worked out! One must bear in mind that life on the mutable cross for unawakened humanity is a completely different game for those who have traversed its many lives and now find themselves upon the fixed cross, developing soul consciousness – and are working out karmic legacies from their mutable cross experiences.

It is noteworthy therefore, that the esoteric money meditation, for the New Group of World Servers7, is always held on Sunday morning. Sun-day, the Sun, when the Sun is rising to its zenith. This meditation is briefly stimulated throughout the week in the daily “noontime recollection” when the Sun is at its zenith again, reminding us of the divine flow of prana that pours through all:

“We know oh Lord of light and love, about the need. Touch our hearts anew with love that we too, may love and give.”

It takes courage, another Leo attribute, to be generous. Courage, love, generosity and unconditionality are all closely linked. One trait that the conscious Leo works upon is pride, the shadow of Leo’s mental strength. It is pride that creates separation and prevents humility; it has nothing to do with the heart, the chalice of love, understanding and forgiveness,

“One basic divine attribute is not yet as strong as it should be in humanity – the attribute of forgiveness. It is still associated with magnanimity. It is not yet seen to be essentially a condition of future relation between all nations, based upon a recognition of our common humanity.”8 (See essay on forgiveness here.)

Leo Soul Brazil

Brazil has been prominent in the news recently over the disproportionate spending on the World Cup soccer instead of badly needed funding for social programs; a lack of generosity from those who govern the people.

Brazil’s horoscope is set for Sept 7, 1822 (4.30 pm), giving Aquarius rising. Mostly, the exoteric charts of nations do not correspond to that which has been assigned by The Tibetan, yet sometimes they do, and a little intuitive tweaking can yield a workable horoscope.

Brazil is a case in point, hence, reversing the exoteric rising sign from Aquarius, yields a chart that corresponds to that given esoterically: Leo rising (soul purpose), Virgo Sun (personality).9

When the riots arose initially from a public transport issue (Gemini), the Moon and Jupiter in Gemini were being activated by transiting Mars. Both planets are prominent at the midheaven of this horoscope, hence the worldwide publicity.

When considering any entity, be it an individual, a group or a nation, not only are the rising and Sun signs of importance, but also the soul and personality rays. Esoteric Astrology is the Science of the Seven Rays, they are inextricably entwined.

In Brazil’s case, the soul ray is the fourth ray of harmony through conflict, also called the ray of art and beauty, the basic ray of humanity. Brazil’s personality ray is the second ray of love-wisdom, the only country in the world that has been assigned a second ray personality, quite a remarkable situation.

The soul ray always works through the rising sign and the personality ray expresses via the Sun sign. Hence the fourth ray soul works through Leo and the second ray personality pours through Virgo.

Brazil is therefore an entity that is on the “second ray” or “heart line” of 4 and 2. In some respects it is a modern sphinx, a creature created by the unification of Leo the Lion and Virgo the Virgin – a lion’s body with the face of a woman. In this cycle, the second ray of love-wisdom pours through Virgo the most powerfully. The mystery of the sphinx concerns the mystery (and unification) of the solar and lunar angels, will and love, soul and personality, masculine and feminine.

In the larger view of history, this modern “mystery of the sphinx” is connected to Brazil’s dharma as the leading nation of the emerging Sixth Rootrace, over the next 25,000 years.

Brazil’s spiritual motto is, “I hide the seed”, hinting at the racial synthesis occurring now, that will bear its fruit in the Sixth Rootrace; it will be a synthesis of many races, but with Latin the roots of Portuguese and Spanish predominating. The ethnic groups are: 47.73% White [European], 43.13% Pardo [Mestizo], 7.61% Black [African], 1.09% Asian [mainly Japanese, then Chinese] and 0.43% Amerindian [Indigenous tribes].

During this Sixth Rootrace (that will last for millions of years), humanity will revert once more to a physically androgynous state, reflecting the inner synthesis of consciousness achieved. Hence the pre-Individualisation state of androgyny in ancient Lemuria will travel full circle at some time during the Sixth Rootrace – but with the gain of conscious evolution.

Brazil completes an esoteric triangle with Britain and the USA. Britain represents the pinnacle of Fifth Rootrace development of the mind. USA is a synthesis of Europe and other ethnicities – it is a bridge between the fifth and sixth rootraces. Brazil represents the future Sixth Rootrace, it is a branchrace seed connected within the Fifth Rootrace. The second ray of love wisdom is the soul of Britain and USA, the personality ray of Brazil:

“You will note that of the major nations only Brazil, Great Britain and the United States of America are definitely under the influence of the second ray. An interesting fact emerges as we consider this grouping. Great Britain is the custodian of the wisdom aspect of the second ray force for the [Fifth] Aryan race, so called.

The United States fulfills the same office for the sixth or coming subrace, which is the germ race for the future sixth great race, whilst Brazil will function as the leading division of the great sixth race.

These three races embody the attractive cohesive aspect of the second ray, and will demonstrate it through wisdom and wise government, based on idealism and love.

The United States will therefore represent a fusion of races, with the Anglo-Saxon element dominating. Brazil will later represent the best of that which the Latin races have eventually to give. This presented fusion will be considered from the angle of the ray types and the basic unfolding principles, and not from the angle of culture and civilisation.

Great Britain therefore represents the aspect of mind which expresses itself in intelligent government, based eventually on just, loving understanding. This, I say, is the ideal before her, but not the fulfilled achievement. The United States represents the intuitive faculty, expressing itself as illumination and the power to fuse and blend.

Brazil (or rather what that country will then be called, for the time of this expression lies thousands of years ahead), will represent a linking interpreting civilisation, based on the unfoldment of the abstract consciousness, which is a blend of the intellect and the intuition, and which reveals the wisdom aspect of love in its beauty. But the period of the development of this great civilisation lies too far ahead to make speculation possible.”10

Note the phrase, “Brazil will function as the leading division of the great sixth race”, pointing to Brazil’s Leo soul coming into its full strength – leadership and “sovereign of the kingdom”. As a foundation for the Sixth Rootrace, Brazil will be a synthesis of the Fifth Rootrace, holding an numerical affinity with Leo, the fifth zodiac sign.

Love and beauty are intrinsic to Brazil’s rays of fourth soul and second personality:

“India, France, the United States of America, Russia and Brazil are all feminine and constitute the nurturing mother aspect. They are feminine in their psychology – intuitive, mystical, alluring, beautiful, fond of display and colour, and with the faults also of the feminine aspect, such as over emphasis upon the material aspects of life, upon pageantry, upon possession and upon money or its equivalent as a symbol of the form side of existence. They mother and nurture civilisation and ideas.”11

Like individuals, nations are at various stages of evolution. Brazil’s fourth ray soul has an unique resonance with two other European nations:

“When the fourth Ray of Harmony through Conflict is the energy expressing itself through the soul, the indications are that the country concerned is nearing the Path of Discipleship or the Path of Probation. Austria and Germany are nearing the Path of Discipleship; Brazil is on the Path of Probation and will rapidly move forward …”12

This passage was written over sixty years ago. As Brazil comes into its own as an economic power (with all the attendant problems), it may well reflect a stepping away from the Path of Probation and nearing the Path of Discipleship.

Yet, with its deeply corrupt economic and political systems, the generosity of Brazil’s Leo soul is not yet fully in evidence; selfishness prevails – as it does in many other nations. Nevertheless, anyone who has visited Brazil will attest to the generosity of the Brazilian people – this is the kind of paradox that one finds in fourth ray nations, particularly Latin ones like Italy!

As Latin America is a large remnant of ancient Atlantis, the old Atlantean karma still lingers, of which theft was its major vice – the polar opposite of generosity and giving. Of course this is an universal problem because what constituted the theft of property and valuables in those days, even though it still continues, is giving way now to the theft of privacy, freedom, individual human rights and information.

As the Sixth Rootrace emerges, the battleground between the old and emerging values will play itself out on the same soil. This is true for the Americas as a whole, including the USA, as these lands are all remnants of Atlantis.

In his comprehensive Tapestry of the Gods, author Michael D. Robbins looks at the combination of Leo and the fourth ray, yielding some clues about Brazil’s future. Here follows just a few points, edited and partly paraphrased for succinctness:

Ø  Flair for the Dramatic – Leo and the fourth ray, full of colour and contrast. Spontaneity and strong improvisational abilities. Flourishing in the arts,  spectacular artistic achievement. [Ed: Avant-garde architecture, a fourth ray “occupation”.]

Ø  Personality Integration – Leo represents the integrated personality, but the fourth ray must first contribute to its harmonization.

Ø  Imagination – both Leo and the fourth ray are connected to this theme.

Ø  Self-Centeredness – Both types [Leo-4th ray] become the dramatic centre of their own experience, and decentralization becomes a necessity.

Ø  Drama of Experiential Living – requires a full entry into circumstance rather than a detached and theoretical view.

Ø  Unification – Leo is about unification under a centralized authority; the fourth ray – cooperative, harmonious unification after inevitable frictions are worked out.

Ø  Intuition serves the revelation of Divine Beauty, glorious beauty.

With two full moons in Leo in 2013, the Leo soul purpose of Brazil may well receive a great stimulation, on the heels of its recent conflicts. Alignment between soul and personality always entails conflict and of course Brazil’s soul is the fourth ray of “harmony through conflict”.

At this time of writing, Venus transits the Leo ascendant of the esoterically rectified horoscope, affirming like an oracle the veracity of using this chart and the right timing for discussing the soul destiny of Brazil. You might be incarnate in the USA, Australia or Europe in this life, but you might very well find yourself in Brazil in the next!
