Civil War in America? Mars in Gemini and a Sixth Ray Personality
Recently I heard speculation that America could soon find itself embroiled in a civil war, which I initially thought was a bit far-fetched. Nevertheless, it started me pondering, particularly when considering the very dualistic and divisive Mars in Gemini in the American horoscope. Currently transiting Pluto has been opposing the Mars position virtually since the beginning of the Iraqi invasion.
Mars co-rules with Neptune the oft fanatical sixth ray of Idealism or Devotion and this is also the personality ray of America. Hence America’s sixth ray personality finds much of its expression through Mars in Gemini – which happens to be square to Neptune in Virgo. Pluto’s transit of Mars therefore, is bringing about an enormous personality purging, the likes of which she has never experienced since her inception in 1776.
Hopefully this crisis will induce a certain subsequent personality alignment for America that will allow her the expression of her second ray soul as opposed to her sixth ray personality:
“Ray Six – Idealism or Devotion, via Mars. This greatly augments the sixth ray personality of the States, thus presenting very real problems in a young people who are apt always to be fanatical and exclusive. Exclusiveness is one of the major weaknesses of the sixth ray type.”1
For the Ray Six personality of America to mature and integrate, Mars in Gemini in the seventh house, square to Neptune in Virgo in the ninth house must be resolved. America’s forcefulness (Mars) in relationships (seventh house), must be superceded by discriminating (Virgo) dialogue (Gemini) that seeks to understand foreign (ninth house) cultures and religions (Neptune/ninth house), as well as its own aspirations and ideals.
As Virgo expresses most strongly the Second Ray in this cycle,2 and as it is the one of the most powerful expressions of the Christ force,3 the successful working out of this square will result in the soul expression of the nation (second ray Love-Wisdom), working through a perfected and integrated personality.
American Civil War 1860: Uranus and the Seventh Ray
One of the main reasons for the Civil War was the pressure exerted upon the south to abolish slavery. Uranus is the planet of liberation, esoterically related to and the vehicle of Sirian forces; and Sirius is conjunct the American Sun.
America has Uranus in Gemini in her natal chart and it was during her first Uranus return (every 84 years) that civil war broke out. In the chart for the first exchange of hostilities (April 12, 1861), Uranus, planet of revolution was conjunct Mars the god of war. This was the time of the “racial avatar” Abraham Lincoln, that great Uranus-ruled, double Aquarian (Sun and rising sign), who as US president preserved the Union during the American Civil War and brought about the emancipation of slaves.
Uranus also rules the seventh ray of Ceremonial Order and this period was also a sub-cycle of this ray. We are currently moving toward a much larger cycle of the seventh ray as the Sun precesses into the sign of Aquarius for the next 2,160 years.
Aquarius is the ruling soul force of the American nation esoterically, whilst in her exoteric horoscope she has an Aquarian Moon; hence Uranus cycles are extremely important in terms of her unfolding dharma and destiny; no less so in World War II, during another national and world crisis in the darkest days of 1944 when America was going through her second Uranus return.
In the civil war a turning point was reached when Grant captured Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863. This event occurred when transiting Uranus (and Mercury) had moved a little further from its Uranus return point to conjoin Mars at around 21 degrees of Gemini. In other words, the liberating forces of Uranus gained the upper hand over Mars in Gemini – emblematic of the schism between north and south.
The sub-phases of the Uranus 360 degree return cycle are also important. If 84 is divided by four, approximately four 21 year periods are obtained. These phases indicate the first square 21 years from the Uranus natal position, 42 years for the Uranus opposition (hence the “mid-life” crisis), 63 years for the second square and 84 years for the return.
In 2005 Uranus commences its second square period before the third Uranus return in 2027 – a couple of years close to 2025, a key date for the hierarchy and a cycle of the fourth ray of Harmony through Conflict. A second Uranus square preceded the 1860 Civil War; within that 21 year period from 1839 to 1860 it carried all the seeds of discontent – slavery, tariffs and states’ rights.
Based upon past cycles then, we see these schisms working out on a higher turn of the evolutionary cycle. This is not to say that by 2027 America will have another civil war, yet as a world leader today, what happens internally has profound ramifications for the rest of the world. A world war would be a more likely scenario by that date, as opposed to a civil war, yet hopefully something avoided by then.
It all depends upon choices for the safety of known materialism or bolder more visionary ones. Some currently claim that choices being offered by Those who watch are pushing Humanity into the most difficult decisions ever made – a “make it or break it” situation. The seeming unresolvability of the current quagmire in Iraq and the Israel-Palestine conflict are major examples of the urgency of the situation.
Yet there is a civil war in America today. A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald is titled, America’s civil war: the Red v the Blue by Paul Sheehan:
“The political landscape is hardening into partisan cultural voting blocs – The United States is not merely poised to choose its next president, it is engaged in a hot war abroad, an imperial occupation in Iraq, and a cultural struggle at home, a sharpening struggle that has become known as the divide between the Red and the Blue. “America has turned into a series of giant voting blocs. Most of the 50 states have become firmly Republican – Red, or firmly Democrat – Blue. They have basically hardened into one-party states.” Thus this year’s election is a confrontation between giant one-party blocs in which just seven states – Florida, Iowa, Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Missouri – will constitute the real battleground. “Geography has also hardened. Southern whites have finally and emphatically gravitated to their natural home, the Republican Party, which in turn is becoming dominated by a conservative, martial religiosity. The Democrats have consolidated around large citadels in the cosmopolitan east and west coasts and traditional Midwest urban heartlands of Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis. Bush and Kerry personify this divide.”
So we can definitely expect more of the same turmoil that preceded the 1860 civil war, yet Americans like many in the world today, are far better informed to make choices, albeit still heavily influenced by the mass media of political campaigns and so forth. The neck and neck struggle at the polls between Bush and Kerry reflects the struggle of the Gemini twins, the warring brothers: Castor and Pollux – one immortal the other mortal. Who will be the immortal victor? Interestingly the election is held just after Halloween, close to another ancient festival:
“While the number one symbolized harmony, order or the good principle (the one God expressed in Latin by Solus, from which the word Sol, the Sun, the symbol of the Deity), number two expressed a contrary idea. The science of good and evil began with it. All that is double, false, opposed to the only reality, was depicted by the binary. It also expressed the contrasts in Nature which are always double: night and day, light and darkness, cold and heat, dampness and dryness, health and sickness, error and truth, male and female, etc. …
The Romans dedicated to Pluto the second month of the year, and the second day of that month to expiations in honour of the Manes. Hence the same rite established by the Latin Church, and faithfully copied. Pope John XIX, instituted in 1003 the Festival of the Dead, which had to be celebrated on the 2nd of November, the second month of autumn.”4
Pluto’s Transit of America’s Mars in Gemini
As mentioned in several other newsletters, America’s Mars in Gemini has had transiting Pluto opposing it since January 2004. The second “hit” occurred in May 2004, the third in late November 2004, with one last “station” in August-September 2005 (about 26′ of arc separating). Hence the window of opportunity is still open for a while, four hits being about the maximum a planet could get. That makes for an intense 15-month period.
In the previous section, Mars in Gemini was discussed in detail in relation to America’s sixth ray Gemini personality. Here we will go a little deeper to explore the implications of the American media who are acting out the shadow of this sixth ray Gemini personality.
An excerpt follows from one of my books: “Mercury is the dispositor of both Mars in Gemini and Neptune in Virgo, and is placed in Cancer, retrograde, where it can be most elusive, diffuse and cunning. “Folded” is a another word that comes to mind. With the opposition to Pluto there can be subversive communication, as well as devious manipulation. As Pluto rules the twelfth house of secrets, this opposition can refer to secret government agencies such as the CIA and NSA. It also refers to mass conditioning and propaganda through the media or these agencies.
Mercury in Cancer can let the emotions cloud clear thought, but also be illumined and receptive to higher intuition. As with all the Cancer placements (four), there needs to be a willingness to continually release the past, (glories and mistakes alike), as it only reinforces the shadow of the American nation.
The negative and positive traits of Mercury’s placement in Cancer have a great bearing on the resolution of the Mars-Neptune square. Mercury opposite Pluto can make for a very persuasive argument and at its extreme, bring much force and pressure on others to conform.
One of the worst traits of Pluto in the second house is the enormous financial institutions and corporations that have selfishly cornered much of the nation’s wealth, with the Cancerian tendency to hoard and hold onto. This intense materialisation inherent in the Capricorn-Cancer axis is a major challenge for this nation to transcend. It is what makes America hated and envied by some foreign nations and religious traditions.
On the other hand, Mercury opposite Pluto can give great insight and probing into the unseen and subtle realms, hence an ideal aspect for those pioneering the intuitive sciences. Mercury in Cancer is highly imaginative and creative, cultivating a fertile bed for the reflection of the intuitive consciousness.”5
Mercury is not only the dispositor of Mars in Gemini, but it is the “final dispositor” of the Sagittarius rising chart. (Jupiter rules Sagittarius and is placed in Cancer. Moon rules Cancer and is placed in Aquarius. Uranus rules Aquarius and is placed in Gemini. Mercury rules Gemini and is placed in Cancer.) Hence Mercury has much power, particularly placed opposite the power planet Pluto.
Transiting Saturn has recently conjoined Mercury in September 2004, three years almost to the day after 9/11. Saturn makes a station in early November, retrograding back over natal Mercury in January 2005, coming back for its third and final hit of Mercury in May 2005. This is just under the time-frame for the Pluto transit of Mars which Mercury rules, hence both transits are inter-related. They are both related to karma, Saturn especially of course and the bringing to account that which is “unlawful”.
American Media Maya Machine
Mars in Gemini is classically the journalist who gets the hot story or goes after it with the passion of a terrier. Gemini and Mercury are of course well known in relation to the media in general – the assimilation and dissemination of news – and not necessarily accurately – a worldwide fact of life. “As Mars squares Neptune in the ninth house, there is a great challenge for America to discriminate clearly between its high idealism and a tendency to myth-making”.6
The glamours of the movie industry and music, addictive substances, emotional psychism and religious cults, are all up for review with this aspect. The American media, with its excesses and exaggerations, is another prime example of how truth is compromised.
Another manifestation of Mars square Neptune is the sharp intellect of Virgo and ninth/seventh house themes around legal matters. Litigation and craftily calculated documents deceive and are major problems borne out in the Cancer Sun square Libran Saturn – the abuse of the law through manipulative practices.
“Mars in the seventh house is going to be spoiling for a fight in many of its relationships; particularly with foreign nations around issues of religion, if we consider Neptune in the ninth house to which it is square.”7
Which brings us to the gross distortions in the American media in the past few years, highlighted during the televised invasion of Iraq with “embedded” journalists, with the outrageous and blatant lies of some gung-ho TV networks and the lack of penetrating and hard questions that senior American journalists failed to ask at the beginning of the Iraq war.
Hence during this period of transiting Saturn criss-crossing Mercury and transiting Pluto opposite Mars, these media manipulations will be further exposed. One crisis that is occurring is the owning of greater media conglomerates by fewer people, Rupert Murdoch’s corporations and Fox a major case in point. Yet other networks are reportedly imitating Fox, trying to out-hype the hypers further compromising their credibilities.
Another factor related to the American Mercury opposite Pluto being triggered by transiting Saturn is a major calling to account of spy agencies such as the CIA. Further, Mercury-Pluto can be extremely persuasive and as it suits spies and “undercover” to a “T”, it can serve the manipulators of the truth – whether they be politicians or their sometime tools, the media. Mercury opposite Pluto conjures up just that – the conjurer! So will transiting Saturn flush them out or not?
Whilst Pluto’s transit opposite Mars dredged up the shocking photos of a Baghdad prison, it has much more to reveal about the shadow side of the American personality. Readers must bear in mind that this young entity America has not had the cyclic chance to do this thus far in its evolution, so although there are numerous crises coming up, ultimately if they all met properly, the soul force of the American nation will supervene after its personality takes some hard lessons.
The “beast” of personality has its major power base in the solar plexus chakra. Mars and Neptune rule this centre and their natal square to one another speak of the mighty challenge to move from the solar plexus to the heart – from fear to courage is the basic paradigm here; the courage required is to break out of limiting and conservative behaviours; to relinquish the continual duping of the public through media manipulation, to resist litigious knee-jerk reactions etc etc.
Further to Mercury’s prominence now, secondary progressed Mercury is retrograding by progression back over the American Moon, regardedly partially (in any entity’s chart) as the “dweller on the threshold” or the “shadow”. This further accentuates the problem of Mars and the sixth ray-Gemini personality.
Retrograde progressed Mercury is waxing to exact on the Aquarian Moon by March 2005, so America is easily in orb of experiencing this aspect now. Of course there are positives that can emerge from this as well, such as the Aquarian ideal of world brotherhood and the serving of humanity with compassion.
But whilst Mercury is retrograde, it can certainly make for mis-communication (media maya) and delays, not to mention bringing out the very selfish and superficial shadow of Moon in Aquarius. Interestingly, the Moon is in a triangular formation with the Sun square Saturn aspect in the American chart – related to law and order, nationally and internationally. (Mercury stays retrograde for about 20 years by progression before it goes direct again.) Bottom line? Its going to get worse before it gets better.
Last but not least, there are rumblings of a vote scam8 in the American elections and if found to be true would not only qualify under the heading of “media maya machine” but could well lead to extreme civil unrest.
