The moon is just entering its monthly balsamic phase before the Gemini new moon on June 15. The balsamic or waning crescent lunar phase is always 3-4 days before the new moon.
This phase of diminishing light can be utilised for quiet rest, reflection and releasing. Solitude, withdrawal within, setting the stage for renewal at the new moon.
The period toward the end of the balsamic phase can have devitalising and depressing effects due to world glamour, affecting meditation work – even into the first couple of days after the new moon.
Something to bear in mind with the one’s inner practice and described in greater detail in the quotation below.
“The term “balsamic” originates from the word “balsam,” which refers to healing substances derived from plants. This connection highlights the restorative qualities associated with this lunar phase.”
“The world glamour. This sweeps an isolated unit, otherwise free from individual conditions producing depression, into the depths of a world reaction. This world glamour with its devitalising and depressing results has its roots in various factors which we have only the time to briefly indicate:
1. Astrological factors, either affecting the planetary chart and hence individuals, or primarily racial. These two factors are oft overlooked.
2. The path of the sun in the heavens. The southern path tends to a lowered vibratory influence and aspirants should bear this in mind in autumn and the early winter months.
3. The dark half of the moon, the period towards the end of the waning moon, and the early new moon. This, as you well know, affects the meditation work.
4. Psychological factors and mass inhibitions due undoubtedly to forces external to the planet and to plans, obscure in their intent to ordinary humanity. These forces, playing upon the human race, affect the most sensitive; they in their turn affect their environment and gradually a momentum is established which sweeps through a race or a nation, through a period or a cycle of years, and produces conditions of profound depression and of mutual distrust.
It causes a sad self-absorption and this we term a panic or a wave of unrest. The fact that the working out may be military, economic, social or political, that it may take the form of a war, of a religious inquisition, of financial stringency or international distrust is incidental.
The causes lie back in the blue prints of the evolutionary process and are governed—even if unrealised—by the good Law.”1
Gemini, Communication and Telepathy
Gemini is well known as the sign of communications and the dissemination of information; it is the third of the new year’s first three festivals, where the impulse in Aries finds its consolidation in Taurus and distribution through Gemini.
The Easter Aries festival celebrates The Christ, the Wesak Taurus festival celebrates the Buddha, whilst the Gemini festival of Goodwill celebrates The Christ again; this is because the One who currently holds the office of The Christ (yes, it’s an office, a post), will soon be taking over the role of the Buddha in this imminent Aquarian dispensation; this is a virtually unprecedented planetary event that coincides with large strides in human consciousness.
These first three festivals of the year are important for establishing the annual impulse, hence The Christ leads the Hierarchy in special meditations during all three full moon periods that are invocative of the Plan and Purpose of Shamballa.
We, as members or aspirants to the various ray ashrams of the Masters, can be impressed by this greater Purpose and help distribute it into the consciousness of Humanity.
Chalice of Christ (Nicholas Roerich)
The Christ is an exemplar of the second ray of Love-Wisdom, the predominant ray energy on this planet. In addition, Gemini has only one ray that is transmitted through it, the second ray of Love-Wisdom.
Gemini is known as the Cosmic Christ and our Earthly Christ is recognised as a representative of Sirian evolution – the main cosmic path for most of Humanity when they reach liberation.
Astronomically speaking, the pillars of the Gemini constellation “form a point of entrance for cosmic energy from Sirius”2:
“Sirius … is the great star of initiation because our Hierarchy (an expression of the second aspect of divinity) is under the supervision or spiritual magnetic control of the Hierarchy of Sirius.
These are the major controlling influences whereby the cosmic Christ works upon the Christ principle in the solar system, in the planet, in man and in the lower forms of life expression. It is esoterically called the “brilliant star of sensitivity.””3
Hence, Gemini transmits this Christ principle through right speech, dialogue and communications of all kinds. Gemini like Libra, is a sign of relationships, adept at finding something in common with anyone, establishing a dialogue that leads to understanding and friendship.
Venus, ruler of Libra, is the esoteric ruler of Gemini, fusing Gemini’s duality, blending The Twins in a marriage of opposites.
Mercury, the exoteric ruler of Gemini is Hermes. Likewise, Venus is Aphrodite, their fusion births the Divine Herm-Aphrodite; buddhi (Mercury) and manas (Venus) are blended in a divine marriage – this is the high potential of Gemini.
Venus it should be remembered, is also the alter ego or higher self of this planet, preserving a unique and ancient relationship.
Right speech and communication are of course the outflowing of what the mind has formulated, how it has clothed ideas in language. Gemini is a mental sign exoterically, an intuitive sign esoterically.
When The Twins are not quarrelling (the conflict between the soul and personality), they seek to stay engaged, a term used when a couple plan to marry.
This engagement process for an individual, between individuals and groups, has infinite possibilities in its diverse expression and refinement, in how we stay engaged with the soul; not just through language and speech but other forms of communication such as music, visual arts, dance etc. Gemini the Juggler is capable of excelling in several areas of the arts at once.
Yet, all these forms of communication are “shrouded”, because as soon as ideas proceed from the mental plane into outer expression they become distorted to some degree. Hence, the higher telepathy holds the promise of clearer, precise and instantaneous communication.
The previous zodiac sign Taurus, rules the vocal cords and the organs of speech, hence the linking and overlapping of the signs with one another, through their sequential unfoldment.
Gemini rules the lungs, that are intimately related to the organs of breathing and speech:
“The Taurian upon the way of liberation would do well to employ the method of directed and motivated speech of an outgoing and explanatory nature in order to transform himself from one who goes wilfully on his personality way into a wise cooperator with the Plan.”4
Therefore, Taurus and Gemini work closely together in the realm of speech and communications. As various planets and signs rule various parts of the body, Gemini rules the etheric body. From one angle, the first five signs could be considered thus:

The etheric body is the mediating principle between all subtle bodies and between the soul and personality, a medium for the telepathic transmission of ideas. Each individual etheric body is connected to the planetary etheric web, linked indissolubly to every other life form; this fact underlies human communication with the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms:
“The function of the etheric body is to receive energy impulses and to be swept into activity by these impulses, or streams of force, emanating from some originating source or other. The etheric body is in reality naught but energy. It is composed of myriads of threads of force or tiny streams of energy, held in relation to the emotional and mental bodies and to the soul by their coordinating effect.
These streams of energy, in their turn, have an effect on the physical body and swing it into activity of some kind or another, according to the nature and power of whatever type of energy may be dominating the etheric body at any particular time.”5
Of course, all the bodies are conditioned by the rays, hence the etheric-physical might be on the seventh ray, whilst the mental body on the fifth ray and so forth.
Other planetary and zodiac forces can also create a strong or weak etheric constitution, depending upon the individual and their karmic liabilities.
“Gemini … is related to the etheric body; it is the custodian of conditioning energy and the intermediary, as far as basic essentials are concerned, between soul and body.
These are the two allied brothers. In the average person, the etheric vehicle is the transmitter of psychic energy, galvanising and coordinating the dense physical body and permitting, therefore, astral and mental control of the personality.
When the man is upon the Path of Discipleship and, therefore, upon the reversed wheel, leading to initiation, the etheric body becomes the transmitter of soul energy and not of personality force; the powerful effect of the second Ray of Love-Wisdom – working through the subjective six rays, according to ray type – begins steadily to dominate the vital body, producing consequently the shift of force and of intensity to the centres above the diaphragm.
The power of the personality lessens and wanes whilst that of the soul waxes and grows. There is much to be learned from the study of the dual activity – higher and lower – of the etheric body and its relation to and responsiveness to the constellation, Gemini …”6
Note the word “intermediary” used to describe the etheric body. Mercury as ruler of Gemini is the intermediary, a mediator, the winged messenger. The aspirant to the mysteries draws upon Mercurial energy to build the antahkarana between personality and soul.
Mercury is quicksilver, a viscous liquid that is formless and inchoate, raw thought and ideas, before they are consolidated and organised into thought-forms by planets such as Saturn and Uranus. The formless nature of Gemini is partially why it can be so scattered and disorganised!
Very briefly, there are three types of telepathy, depending upon the unfoldment of consciousness of each individual in their soul’s evolution: Instinctual, mental and intuitive.
Instinctual is associated with the solar plexus centre, mental through the throat centre, and intuitive through the head and throat centre. It is said that the latter intuitive telepathy is one of the developments upon the Path of Discipleship, embodying the “fruits of meditation”.

Telepathy or the Science of Impression, is a huge subject and requires a thorough occult understanding of the subtle bodies and the centres.7
Is Mind-Reading Technology Associated with Telepathy?
“The slowly manifesting powers of the radio and the sensitive workings of the perfecting radio mechanisms and of television are but the response in physical matter of the perfected telepathic powers and television of the minds of the Masters of the Wisdom.”8
An extension or next progression from radio and TV is the Internet – or World Wide Web. Mind-reading technology has been investigated in the past several years by Meta, Google and other big tech companies:
“The social media giant believes that this innovative study will help them develop a “non-invasive, wearable device that lets people type by simply imagining themselves talking.”
The study was successful in epilepsy patients with electrodes placed on their head for assessing their seizures before surgery.” (Facebook is working on technology to read your thoughts.)
Obviously there are concerns if the tech is used selfishly, i.e. more data harvesting for control or monetary gain – and most big tech has a shocking track record in this regard. The widespread establishment of natural resource-greedy data centres all over the planet, is claimed to “serf the people”, creating digital prisons of control and exploitation.
Most people are acquainted with the fact that their phones or laptops are constantly monitoring personal conversations, key strokes and web surfing. Then part of that conversation or watched-video is mirrored back in an advertisement for a related product.
Big Tech acts with impunity on this illegal tracking process and is a tool of various intelligence agencies. In fact, Google’s core technology was seed-funded and overseen by the CIA and NSA during its development at Stanford University in the 1990’s.
But now, the incidence of individual reports about intercepted personal thoughts is setting off alarm bells. That is, not sharing with anyone a certain thought via the written or spoken word, then seeing it on a social media feed or targeted email.
In relation to Gemini and the etheric body, the world wide web is a great description for the externalisation of the planetary etheric body, via technology.
Bio-technology has become more well known in recent years via developers like Elon Musk and his Neurolink program that, “holds the promise of merging people with artificial intelligence”.
Although mind reading technology may appear to be a form of telepathy, it is claimed thus,
“Mind reading technology, scientifically known as Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), does not read thoughts telepathically but instead decodes measurable neural signals to infer intent, perceptions, or speech. The process relies on two main stages: signal acquisition and algorithmic decoding.
Techniques like Electroencephalography (EEG) measure electrical activity via scalp electrodes, while Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) detects changes in blood flow (oxygenation) to map brain activation.
Surgically implanted electrodes, such as microelectrode arrays or Electrocorticography (ECoG) grids, record high-resolution signals directly from neurons or the brain’s surface.
Captured signals are processed by machine learning algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to translate neural patterns into actionable output:
AI models are trained to associate specific neural firing patterns with known stimuli, motor intentions, or linguistic structures. For example, large language models can help autocorrect or predict words based on incomplete neural data.
The decoded signals are converted into commands, such as moving a robotic arm, selecting letters for text-based communication, or generating synthetic speech from imagined articulation.
Neural signatures.
Recent breakthroughs like “mind captioning” use AI to generate descriptive text from fMRI scans of visual imagery, linking brain activity to narrative concepts rather than just single words.
Current technology is effective at decoding motor intentions (like moving a limb), imagined speech, and visual stimuli (such as identifying objects a person is viewing).
However, it cannot access arbitrary, complex, or private thoughts without prior training on specific neural signatures, and it generally requires the subject’s cooperation and extensive data calibration.”9
The earlier-quoted passage about Facebook was from a 2019 article. It is pretty safe to speculate that a lot more has been developed in the past seven years.
Hence, given the statement above, “it cannot access arbitrary, complex, or private thoughts” – combined with what many people are reporting lately – private thoughts are being more commonly accessed.
This is probably due to individual data collection that has been built up during that time, which corresponds to part of the passage above, “It generally requires … extensive data calibration.”
Neural Networks and the Nadi System
A neural network is, “a computational model inspired by the structure of biological neural networks”. There is biotech, the interface between the etheric body and technology, hence mind-reading technology works on this frontier.
When considering biological neural networks and the computational models, they are obviously similar.
When examining the biological neural network, there is the etheric body of the planet in all kingdoms. The Nadis are the many intricate channels that allow prana to circulate throughout the body. When the Nadi system is hindered, it has an impact on physical and mental wellbeing.
“The outgoing forces from a centre [chakra within the body] play upon the etheric counterpart of the entire intricate network of nerves which constitute the nervous system.
These counterparts of identical subjective correspondences are called in the Hindu philosophy, the “nadis“; they constitute an intricate and most extensive network of fluid energies which are an intangible, interior, paralleling system to that of the bodily nerves, which latter system is in fact an externalisation of the inner pattern of energies.
There is as yet no word in any European tongue for the ancient word “nadi,” because the existence of this subjective system is not yet recognised, and only the materialistic concept of the nerves as a system built up in response to a tangible environment yet holds sway in the West.
The idea of these nerves being the dense physical result of an inner sensitive response apparatus is still undefined and unrecognised by modern Western science.
When recognition is accorded to this subtle substance (composed of threads of energy) underlying the more tangible nerves, we shall have moved forward in our approach to the entire problem of health and disease, and the world of causes will be that much nearer.
This network of nadis forms a definite life pattern which varies according to the personality ray.
The nadis, therefore, determine the nature and the quality of the nervous system with its extensive network of nerves and plexi covering the entire physical body.
The nadis, and consequently the network of nerves, are related primarily to two aspects of man’s physical equipment—the seven major centres in the etheric body (the substantial body which underlies the dense physical body), and the spinal column with the head.
It must always be remembered that the etheric body is a physical body, though composed of subtler material than the one we can see and touch. It is made of substance or of that which “substands,” or underlies, every part and particle of the dense physical vehicle. ”10

Mercury in Cancer: 4th Ray and Intuition
Mercury entered Cancer during the full moon period on June 1 and will stay there until August 9 – for nine weeks. Hence, as the Sun moves through Mercury-ruled Gemini, its expression will be considerably qualified by Mercury’s movement through Cancer.
The intellectual disposition of Gemini will be influenced by deep-seated emotional patterns and unconscious desires may veil mental impressions. Thinking can tend to centre around home, family, food security, real estate, the acquisition of property and territory – legal or illegal.
Given Mercury’s reputation as the trickster in at-times vague and nebulous Cancer, this is a position that can be unconsciously devious. This is due to the lower expression of Cancer’s esoteric ruler Neptune.
Here are the two planets of intuition, Mercury and Neptune. Mercury rules the lower and higher subplanes of the mental plane – the concrete mind and the abstract mind.
At its highest however, Mercury goes above and beyond the mental plane, ruling the buddhic plane – realm of intuition, direct knowledge – or the sixth sense.
The buddhic plane is the fourth of the seven planes of perception, linking the two poles of pure spirit with matter. It is the goal of human evolution to achieve buddhic consciousness and liberation.
This fourth plane of perception corresponds to the fourth ray of Harmony through Conflict, the main ray that rules over Humanity as a whole. Neptune most likely has the edge over Mercury as the highest expression of buddhi:
“No man begins to co-ordinate the buddhic vehicle until he comes under Neptunian influence in some life or another. When this is the case, his personality horoscope will show Neptunian influence dominating somewhere.”11
The “personality horoscope”means a strong aspect of Neptune to the Sun or Moon, or even Mercury and Venus.
Buddhi and Christ-consciousness are synonymous terms, and Neptune is one of the names for the One who holds the office of the Christ – “Who rules the ocean, whose trident and astrological symbol signifies the Trinity in manifestation.”12
The influence of Neptune from the buddhic plane is a highly refined frequency – which is why its exoteric astrological influence is often noted as “vague and confused” because the astral body development of humanity as a whole, is not ready to fully assimilate Neptune’s energies. (Similarly with other planets like Uranus.)
As Neptune rules the “waters”, it has a direct correspondence to the astral plane, where buddhic inspiration births inspiration and imagination, particularly in art and music.
Hence, esoterically Mercury in Cancer is a super-intuitive placement and was in the horoscope of Alice A. Bailey – the amanuensis for The Tibetan, Djwhal Khul.
In this author’s astro-biography of AAB (Soul Cycles of the Seven Rays I), Mercury in Cancer is identified as the main significator of her capacity to be in telepathic rapport with DK. This collaboration was over a period of 30 years, writing a total of 24 books.
Bailey had the Sun in Gemini and also Venus, the esoteric ruler of that sign. Mercury in Cancer’s placement is amplified by its sextile to Cancer’s esoteric ruler Neptune – in Taurus, creating a semi mutual reception.
We live in an age where the concrete mind dominates, though the development of the intuition is gradually assuming greater influence – and will continue to do so as the world enters the Aquarian Age.
The hierarchical ruler of Aquarius the Water Bearer is the Moon, which “veils” God of the Waters Neptune13, hinting at this phase of development over the next 2,000 years.
Mercury Retrograde in Cancer: Lords of Karma (June 6 – August 7)
The pre-shadow phase of Mercury retrograde began on June 6 and goes retrograde proper on June 29 – right at the Cancer-Capricorn full moon (June 30) – where it makes a close conjunction to Jupiter in the last degree of Cancer.
Mercury concludes its post shadow phase (returning to its normal daily motion) by August 7.
Hence, a long eight-week window of opportunity at the individual, group and national levels – to reflect upon and communicate on basic Cancerian themes: Home, family, food, emotional security, housing and property.
And similar to lunar-related Taurus, Cancer’s influence extends to earth resources such as oil, gas and minerals. Cancer is a sign of fundamental living needs and through its lunar rulership, can create fear about lack, retreating to base chakra survival consciousness. (Currently, Jupiter’s passage through Cancer indicates abundance for all.)
On a global scale, the worst case scenario during Mercury retrograde might be fuel and food shortages – squabbling over oil resources – due to the illegal and unprovoked attack upon Iran. Fuel shortages have not really kicked in yet for most nations, only price rises.
But if blockades continue for one reason or another, then crippling shortages may result. That is why Cancer is known as the hoarder of the zodiac, or the prudent prepper who makes sure the larder is well-stocked – Cancer the resource manager.
Unresolved family issues may surface during this period (not just biological family), encouraging the positive theme of Mercury retrograde – to re-examine consequences of previous actions. In this respect, Mercury qualifies as one of the “four lords of karma”:
“… there are four Lords of Karma associated with the Council Chamber at Shamballa. They represent—in Their totality—the three Rays of Aspect, and one of Them represents the four minor Rays of Attribute.”14
The three rays of aspect are rays one, two and three – Will-Power, Love-Wisdom and Active-Intelligence – ruled respectively by Vulcan, Jupiter and Saturn.
Mercury rules the fourth ray of Harmony through Conflict (a ray of attribute) – and Saturn is the most well known planet associated with karma:
“Saturn is one of the most potent of the four Lords of Karma and forces man to face up to the past, and in the present to prepare for the future.”15
To expand a little on this profound theme of karma that is often bandied about in a very superficial way:
“… the four Maharajas, or the four Lords of Karma in the solar system … are specifically concerned with the evolution at the present time of the human kingdom. These four are connected with:
1. The distribution of karma, or human destiny, as it affects individuals, and through the individuals, the groups.
2. The care and tabulation of the akashic records. They are concerned with the Halls of Records, or with the “keeping of the book,” as it is called in the Christian Bible; They are known in the Christian world as the recording angels.
3. The participation in solar councils. They alone have the right during the world cycle to pass beyond the periphery of the planetary scheme, and participate in the councils of the Solar Logos.
Thus They are literally planetary mediators, representing our Planetary Logos and all that concerns Him in the greater scheme of which He is but a part.
Co-operating with these karmic Lords are the large groups of initiates and devas who occupy themselves with the right adjustment of:—
The Last Angel (Nicholas Roerich)
a. World karma. b. Racial karma. c. National karma. d. Group karma. e. Individual karma – and who are responsible to the Planetary Logos for the correct manipulation of those forces and building agencies which bring in the right Egos [souls] on the different rays at the correct times and seasons.”16
The other positive attribute of Mercury’s retrograde passage through Cancer is the cultivation of the intuition. Through its moon rulership, Cancer is about basic instinct, yet through its soul ruler Neptune, Cancer is about intuition.
Hence, this retrograde period affords the opportunity to move from instinct to intuition. To cultivate the awareness of a tendency to be driven by instinctual fears, learning to trust the ever-increasing intuition which is associated with the heart, courage and daring. (Le coeur conquers!)
Along with Saturn, the Cancer-Capricorn axis – prominent at the June 15 new moon and June 29 full moon, is one of seven gateways for the forces of Sirius to pass through. Transiting Mercury passed over the Sirius point on June 11 and will be close again on July 24:
“Cancer—Capricorn—Saturn (which are an expression of Sirian energy) – enable the aspirant to tread the Path of Purification, of Probation. These energies focus and qualify the energy of the Great Lodge of the Most High in that distant Sun.
They pour through the Hierarchy upon the mass of men and enable the unit in that mass to “isolate himself and turn his back upon the past and find his way on to that section of the Path wherein he learns to feel.”17
“Learns to feel” here is not simply the emotional nature of sensitive water sign Cancer, but again, the intuition through soul ruler Neptune.
